Hans Boekler Doctoral Fellowship Available for study in Germany

The Hans Boeckler Foundation of the German Federation of Trade Unions (DGB) is pleased to announce the Hans Boeckler Doctoral Fellowship for 2012-2013. In March a committee will award one fellowship. The deadline for applications is February 15, 2012.

The Hans Boeckler Doctoral Fellowship provides funding for international grad students interested in conducting research in Germany.

UALE delegation produces film on Cananea strike

"Crossing the Border to Cananea" is the title of a 32 minute documentary produced by members of a 2010 UALE delegation to Cananea, Mexico. The film concerns the three year strike by members of Los Mineros at the huge copper mine in Cananea operated by Grupo Mexico.

Harvest of Loneliness, film about the Bracero Program screens on PBS around the country

Harvest of Loneliness, a documentary about the Bracero Program by UALE member Vivian Price and UC Irvine Chicano/Latino Studies professor Gilbert Gonzalez, is being shown on PBS stations al across the US this fall.

Victory at UMSL

Yesterday, University of Missouri-St. Louis Chancellor Thomas George and Provost Glen Cope issued a statement to faculty and students supporting academic freedom and expressing regret for "the distress to [Don Giljum] and others that has been caused by the unauthorized copying, editing and distribution of the course videos." The statement also says that Don "remains eligible to teach at UMSL"

An online petition set up by UALE in support of the beseiged UM faculty members garnered 803 signatures in the few days it was up.

Right-wing Blogger Targets Labor Studies

Earlier this week, right-wing blogger Andrew Breitbart published several highly-edited and deceptive videos purporting to show that UALE member Judy Ancel, at UM Kansas City, and union leader Don Giljum at UM St. Louis, preached violence and communism in a labor studies course they co-taught on the 2 campuses.

While UMKC has so far defended Ancel and the labor studies program Don Giljum has already lost both his union job and his position as adjunct faculty at UMSL.

UALE Statement Regarding Attacks on University of Missouri Labor Educators

Yesterday, UALE released the following statement.

"Recently, videotape excerpts of a labor education class taught by our colleague, Judy Ancel, director of The Institute for Labor Studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and union leader Don Giljum, have been circulating on the Internet.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS FOR LABOR-ORIENTED STUDENTS

The Department of Labor Studies and Employment Relations at Penn State University is offering two-year Graduate Assistantships for labor-oriented students interested in pursuing a M.S. in HRER (Human Resources and Employment Relations) degree beginning Spring or Fall 2012. We are particularly interested in students who are planning to pursue careers working for unions. These assistantships cover all the costs of the degree program, including tuition and living costs, in exchange for 20 hours a week working with a faculty member as a research or teaching assistant. Applicants must meet requirements for admission to the M.S. program. Assistantships will be awarded on a competitive basis.
