UALE Elects New EBoard, Sets Course for Future

EBoard Elections

UALE EBoard elections this year included some hotly-contested seats. The top office, however, was not one of them: Elissa McBride was elected President of UALE by acclaim. She replaces Dennis Serrette, who was termed out.

Helena Worthen will stay on for another term as Vice President representing university programs. She will be joined this time around by Cheryl Teare, AFT, who was elected V.P. for unions. Dawn Addy, of FIU, has taken on the role of Treasurer. The roster of officers is rounded out by Mike Wisniewski (AFSCME), who was elected Secretary.

Other Eboard members elected this year are:

  • Eastern Region: Elise Bryant, National Labor College
  • Midwest Region: Don Taylor, University of Wisconsin
  • Southern Region: Joan Hill, USW
  • Western Region: Verlene Jones, King County Labor Council, WA
  • Union-based Rep.: Eric Muldoon, CSEA
  • University/College-based Rep.: Bob Bussel, U. of Oregon
  • Community-based Rep.: Bob Ginsburg, Center on Work and Community Development
  • At Large:
    • Tracy Chang, Rutgers
    • Tess Ewing, UMass Boston
    • Kent Wong, UCLA

Task Force on UALE's Future

In other action, UALE took steps to implement the recommendations of the Task Force on UALE's Future, that was set up at last year's meeting. The recommendations included hiring a staff person to coordinate a membership drive, funding research, clarifying, redefining and reviving the various Committees, Task Forces, Working Groups and other bodies that do UALE's work between conferences, and increasing dues in order to make this work possible. The membership meeting approved the dues increase -- the first since UALE's founding-- and the new EBoard will now take on the task of hiring the membership drive coordinator and setting up a procedure for allocating research grants.

New Working Groups

Three brand-new Working Groups were born at the conference: On-Line Education, Popular Education, and Working Writers. In addition, three former Task Forces were reborn as Working Groups: Central Labor Councils, K-12 Labor Education (formerly Labor in the Schools), Immigration and Globalization. All met during the conference and made plans for future work. Each has been given its own spot on this website, where they can upload resouces, carry on discussions and share news. (Click on "Working Groups" in the main menu.) All are open to other members to join.

Resolutions

Last but far from least, UALE overwhelmingly approved three resolutions that will give institutional clout to work that many of our members have been doing as individuals.  The resolutions, " Support K-12 Labor Education Efforts", "Resolution in Support of Mexican Workers", and "Resolution on the DREAM Act and the Deportation of Matias Ramos" can be seen in their entirety from the March 26 Meeting Minutes page.
