Judy Ancel, Director of The Institute for Labor Studies at UMKC, has been voted the recipient of UALE's 2009 Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Labor Education for her excellent work in pulling together and coordinating the Heartland Labor Forum, Kansas City's only radio program about the workplace
The Award for Lifetime Achievement went to Charlie Micallef, Educational Representative at the IAMAW's Winpisinger Education and Technology Center, in recognition of his more than 30 years as a labor educator, his service to UALE and our predecessor organization Workers Education Local 189, and all the encouragement, help and support he has given over the years to others in the field.
The Best Book award went to Fernando Gapasín and Bill Fletcher, Jr., for their 2008 book Solidarity Divided. This award was decided by the vote of UALE members from among the nominations posted previously on this website.
The award for the Best Labor Studies Journal Article is voted on by the LSJ Editorial Board. The winner this year is Jason Albright, for his article “Contending Rationality, Leadership, and Collective Struggle: The 2006 Justice for Janitors Campaign at the University of Miami,” in Vol. 33, No. 1 (March 2008).
The winner of the final award, New Generation/Best Student Paper, was chosen at the Conference from among the papers delivered by students. The New Generation Award went to Jason Stanley, of New York University Department of Sociology, for his paper "Cross-Border Unionism in an Era of neoliberal Globalization"
The awards were presented in a ceremony at the closing luncheon of the Conference, on Saturday, April 18.
