Director of Membership Development and Staff Development

Based in San Jose, CA

This position is responsible for the full spectrum of training and development of members and staff for a union of over 40,000 members and 100 staff covering 17 counties in California.

The Director of Staff and Membership Development will participate with other senior staff to develop individuals’ skills and abilities to negotiate contracts, maintain good worksite organization, meet goals and recruit and train member leaders.

He or she will manage and develop a mentorship program and assist new lead workers, managers and members both independently and in coordination with other supervisors to work successfully.

The assignment includes outreach and partnership development with other training institutes, unions or non-profits to increase the union’s ability to offer a wide variety of interesting and important training and personal development opportunities.


  • Develops, modifies and manages through coordination with other directors, the union’s steward, leadership and negotiator training.
  • Assists managers in identifying deficits in training and skills of groups or individual staff and develops appropriate remedial work where necessary.
  • Coordinates with organizing, political, research and communication Directors to develop appropriate specialized training for members and staff.
  • Develops an Education and Training Committee throughout the union.
  • Establishes relationships with like-minded non-profits and educational organizations to develop training for groups of members such as industry caucuses, retirees, or social justice groups.
  • Produces or manages the production and updating of training manuals, staff evaluation training tools and workshop videos and multi-media presentations.
  • Develops, in coordination with the Communications Department, social media updates, training sessions, surveys and other opportunities to connect with membership.
  • Supports and expands current cultural and social justice activities as well by developing and recommending innovative events to attract members of color and other underrepresented groups, including younger members, seniors and members’ children.
  • Manages and participates personally in new staff orientation and initial training, new and experienced negotiator training, and related workshops and events.


  • The successful candidate will have worked for at least three years as an internal or external organizer, union trainer and/or similar position on a local union or international union environment.
  • At least 2 years in a supervisory or director position within a local union or comparable non-profit.
  • Experience as an educator or trainer may be substituted if other education or experience have given the candidate a thorough knowledge of the labor union environment.
  • Ability to participate with a team of union staff leaders effectively and cooperate fully where tasks overlap and to share a vision of ways to work together.
  • Commitment to build a new form of unionism that emphasizes a multitude of ways to fight for economic equity and social justice.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within California for meetings and presentations and to work odd and unusually long hours on occasion.
  • Great skill in oral and written communication. Spanish language skills are a plus.
  • Patience and consistency in mentoring new or struggling staff or directors to improve their skills and recommend corrective action.
  • Extensive knowledge of current labor union negotiating, recruiting and organizing skills or an ability to fill any gaps in that knowledge very quickly.

REQUIREMENTSMust possess a valid California driver’s license; must pass a DMV check and have a good driving record; must have auto insurance that covers business driving (minimum of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident bodily injury liability/$100,000 property coverage); and must possess an automobile for business use.
