National Labor College is the nation’s only institution of higher education designed exclusively to serve the educational needs of union members through fully online as well as low residency degree completion programs. It was founded by the AFL-CIO, who continues to sponsor the College and its programs. It is fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, its programs are approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, and the College is a participant in the Title IV financial aid programs of the United States Department of Education.
The College’s School of Labor Studies offers a Bachelor of Arts degree completion program in Labor Studies with six majors; its School of Professional Studies offers bachelor degree completion programs in Construction Management, Business Administration, and Emergency Readiness and Response Management. The College provides an extensive assessment of experiential learning program, providing union members with the opportunity to earn credit for apprenticeship programs, military education, union training programs, and other collegiate learning gained in non-collegiate settings.
The College also offers short residency Union Skills courses and workshops focused on the necessary skills union leaders and members need to sustain and grow their unions. These courses are offered for collegiate credit and can be applied to an NLC degree program as elective credit.
The College is home to the Lane Kirkland Center, a state of the art conference center designed to serve as a resource for unions and other non-profit organizations wishing to hold meetings, conferences and training programs at an all- union facility. The College also is home to the George Meany Memorial Archives and the AFL-CIO Library.
