American Association of University Professors Department of Organizing and Services Campaign Organizer (New Mexico)
The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is pleased to announce a temporary Campaign Organizer position, a position which will be filled as soon as possible. This position offers a unique opportunity to play a leadership role in a higher education organizing campaign. The Campaign Organizer will work at the direction of AAUP’s Organizing Director and the Senior Program Officers assigned to our New Mexico campaigns.
Duties and Responsibilities 1. Coordinate and perform the day-to-day work of the AAUP’s external organizing campaigns in New Mexico. 2. Identify, recruit, and develop department leaders. 3. Develop organizing committee member individual skills through accompanying them on office visits, giving them feedback, and modeling excellent organizing skills. 4. Support committee in developing meeting agendas and making effective turnout plans for events. 5. Help develop and run training sessions for newly recruited committee members. 6. Identify on-going training needs of organizing committee and help to develop and lead trainings. 7. On a daily basis, work extensively in the field, including office visits. 8. Work with part-time staff to manage the database and generate daily and weekly reports. 9. Help develop the campaign plan by identifying new challenges and working collaboratively on solutions. 10. Coordinate field work on a daily basis with the campaign director and senior program officers. Qualifications 1. Two or more years experience in external union organizing. Demonstrated skill in organizing all phases of an external campaign—from leadership identification and committee recruitment to getting out the vote. 2. Experience and demonstrated skill in working with professional groups and individuals. 3. Outstanding written and oral communication skills. 4. Demonstrated ability to deliver on short-term and long-term campaign goals. Preferred Qualifications 1. Experience organizing faculty in higher education. 2. Experience teaching in higher education. Advanced degree desirable. 3. Proficient in Microsoft Office/Word, Excel, and databases. The Department of Sociology and the Labor Center invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to be appointed Fall 2012.
We are searching broadly for candidates with scholarly expertise in labor movements, the sociology of work, and cognate fields. Possible areas of focus might include: globalization, immigration, political economy, public policy, labor history and law, organizing and collective bargaining. The College is seeking a Dean of the School of Labor Studies (SLS). The SLS Dean will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the SLS, including the BA and certificate programs and the NLC’s Union Skills training courses, which are offered for college credit. The SLS Dean will directly supervise the SLS faculty (full-time and part-time) and staff and work with the NLC’s other academic administrators to coordinate the College’s academic program. National Labor College
The National Labor College is the only institution in the United States with a mission based exclusively on service to the labor movement. NLC is first and foremost a teaching institution. The learning environment is made up of students and faculty who together form a learning community based on a common understanding of the world of work and the ecology of the labor movement. Its student body is made up of experienced, highly skilled working adults who have multiple commitments to family, job, union and community. The College honors higher learning that takes place both inside and outside the College classroom and has a fully developed Prior Learning Assessment program in place. It is accredited by The Middle States Commission on Higher Education to offer degree completion baccalaureate degrees and currently awards a Bachelor of Arts in Labor Studies with both fully online and low residency courses.
With its recent addition of a new School of Professional Studies, the NLC is implementing threefully online degree completion program that will respond to the academic needs and interests of working adults in unions and union families across the country. With these new programs, the NLC has need for a full-time administrator who can focus on the existing Labor Studies program. The Labor Studies degree program has a strong foundation in the liberal arts, while the NLC’s credit bearing Union Skills program is designed to train union members, leaders and activists in all facets of union work. The College also offers an excellent health and safety curriculum that is embodied in the Rail HAZMAT Training program, the Susan Harwood Training Program and OSHA-approved courses that are part of the National Resource Consortium.

Brief Description
The Institute for Labor Studies and Research (ILSR) at West Virginia University has an opening for an individual who will be responsible for conducting labor and industrial relations research; developing, coordinating, and teaching educational programs for the labor movement; and providing service to labor organizations, union members and other clients.
ILSR is a program unit of the Center for Community, Economic, and Workforce Development, part of the WVU Extension Service. ILSR’s mission is “to support and strengthen the trade union movement, to improve labor-management relations, to promote social justice within unions, and to enhance labor’s role in the community.” This mission is “accomplished by providing university-quality programs of teaching, research, and service for labor organizations at the local, state, regional, and national levels.”
The successful candidate will be expected to take an active role in all ILSR initiatives and to work collaboratively with other ILSR faculty to fulfill the unit’s research, teaching, and service obligations. The position will report to the Program Leader of ILSR.
Major Responsibilities
Qualifications Master’s degree required, earned doctorate preferred, in industrial relations, social science, law, or other related field. Demonstrated achievement in research is required and evidence of successful labor education and/or union experience is necessary.
The position requires an individual who can demonstrate the capacity to work collaboratively to conduct basic and applied research, teaching, and service activities for the trade union movement. A labor educator who has developed and published in an area of expertise is desired.
Special Requirements
Salary $55,000 - $65,000, to be commensurate with experience. This is a full-time, tenure track position with the West Virginia University Extension Service. Significant areas are teaching and research with a reasonable contribution in service.

DOS includes a professional staff member in our western office (with an additional staff member currently being recruited), two professional staff in the D.C. office (one currently being recruited), two temporary organizers who are currently in the field in New Mexico and Chicago, and an associate/assistant program staff member plus a half-time temporary staff person.
The AAUP is organizing on a national scale. We have three active collective bargaining campaigns, two sites in which faculty have unionized and are working to negotiate their first contracts, and several percolating situations at a number of campuses. Nationally, we have 70 collective bargaining units, with which the department needs to be in regular contact, and to which DOS staff need to provide supportive training and services. DOS staff also work with over 30 active state conferences and hundreds of chapters that do not have collective bargaining. The position requires an individual with a demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively to conduct teaching, research, and service activities for the trade union movement. A labor educator who can work with labor and community organizations on issues that impact workforce, community and economic development, community decision-making, and organizational leadership is desired.

THE POSITION:
The Director provides creative leadership and vision for the Labor Occupational Health Program. The director oversees an accomplished professional staff of labor and community educators, attorneys, industrial hygienists and others. S/he has oversight responsibilities for a range of programs that develop and promote evidence-based practices to prevent injury and illness in workplaces and communities locally, regionally, nationally, and in some cases, internationally.
The Director is responsible for leading annual strategic planning and evaluation to establish organizational priorities. S/he is responsible for coordinating and mobilizing a development plan to secure and manage the necessary funding to implement the strategic plan, including funding from federal, state and private sources. S/he serves as the “PI (Project Director) for major grants and contracts.
The Director promotes and represents the interests of LOHP/COEH within the University and with outside constituents including labor, community, professional, and funding organizations.
The Director of LOHP also maintains his/her professional activity as a recognized expert in the field of occupational and environmental health through research, training, and service. The Director is expected to be productive in professional publications and/or presentations.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Director is a leader, who is an articulate spokesperson, creative planner, accomplished administrator and successful fundraiser, who:
· Shows evidence of being a respected leader in the field of occupational health, environmental justice, worker education, or closely related field
· Has a master’s degree in public health or closely related field; doctorate preferred
· Can demonstrate the ability to effectively identify, obtain and manage large-scale funding

· Has proven leadership ability, including working with a diverse staff and constituency, an inclusive and participatory management approach, and strategic planning skills

The Labor Studies Center is the labor education arm of Labor@Wayne, a broader initiative to build Wayne State's national and regional reputation around labor. The Research Institute on Social and Economic Policy at FIU (www.risep-fiu.org) is hiring a one-year funded position for research on social and economic justice issues in Florida. Research areas will include state and local tax and budget issues, best practices for equitable development and targeted investment in low-income communities, economic development and workforce development, and family supporting work policies, within a frame of worker and immigrant rights and racial and gender justice. JOB TITLE: SPECIALIST
CLASSIFICATION: PROFESSIONAL IV
STATUS: EXEMPT
Summary of Position: The Senior Specialist is the Solidarity Center’s authority in a particular area of expertise, and leads Solidarity Center work in that area. S/he is thoroughly conversant with all aspects of the field, keeps abreast of new developments, and acts as an organizational clearinghouse for information, materials and curricula.
S/he is responsible for developing organizational standards for the area of specialization, and for holding Solidarity Center staff accountable for maintaining those standards. S/he assists in generating funding, both private and government, for Solidarity Center programs in the area of specialization. S/he designs programs and writes funding proposals, and assists regional and field offices in their efforts. S/he may be called on to develop curriculum and training materials, and to conduct training for staff and partners to help develop their capacity for work in the field.
The Specialist advises the Solidarity Center on policy and advocacy around the area of specialization, and serves as an area resource to Solidarity Center staff and field programs. At the direction of the Executive Director, s/he liaises with counterparts in the AFL-CIO and affiliated unions.
S/he is the primary representative of the Solidarity Center in venues dedicated to the discussion of the issues in his/her specialty -- expanding space for a broad discussion of the field with partners, donors, and within the US and global labor movements. S/he coordinates with counterparts in Washington-based NGOs, and U.S. Government agencies.
Although the Specialist is not primarily responsible for program implementation, s/he is responsible for monitoring program implementation in his/her area of specialization and reports to the Executive Director on compliance with issue workplans that s/he develops with program managers. S/he monitors these programs to advise on their meeting of budget targets as well as on programmatic results. S/he may from time-to-time be asked to develop and implement model or pilot projects, or to provide implementation assistance on a short-term basis. S/he has working knowledge of and experience in US government regulations and procedures related to the funding and management of grants. S/he produces well-written program reports and evaluations.
S/he assists with and, when necessary, provides logistical support for international visitors and participants in Washington-based programs related to his/her area of specialization conducted by the Solidarity Center, AFL-CIO, affiliates, GUFs and/or other related organizations.
Basic Qualifications: An Area Specialist must have an expert background and strong work history in the area of expertise. S/he must have a demonstrated ability to articulate the union case for work in the particular field, and to generate program funding. S/he must have the ability to lead, inspire, and develop capacity of co-workers – including managers --and partners around the area of specialization. The individual must be able to work independently and without supervision, and to ensure work is completed within program deadlines. S/he must be capable of managing multiple assignments simultaneously and of making substantive decisions that impact the programs and image of the Solidarity Center. Most importantly, s/he must be able to develop and implement and often lead or co-lead--with the appropriate Solidarity Center partners--thematic campaigns that preserve and/or raise standards for working people around the world in the area of expertise for which s/he has been hired.
Candidates for the position will have extensive knowledge of international relations and trade union and socio-economic and political developments in the U.S. and abroad. Previous trade union experience, and/or experience in the Center as a Program Officer III or equivalent position are required. Candidates must have, at a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in political science, international relations, labor relations or related fields and/or ten years equivalent work experience. Good communications and writing skills are a must. Computer literacy for word processing and simple spreadsheets is required. S/he must have the ability to work and interact easily with a wide variety of people. Fluency in a foreign language is a plus.

· Assist and advise regional and field offices in program development and proposal writing;
· Recruit outside expert program consultants and other technical staff as needed;
· Provide technical assistance and support to conduct program evaluations of field projects and recruit evaluators;
· Share information on the area of expertise as requested by Washington-based U.S. government offices and Congress;

About the SEIU Multi-Employer Training & Education Fund
The fund is a state-wide joint effort of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania and participating employers to upgrade the skills of health care workers and improve the quality of patient care. Originally focused on nursing home workers, the fund is now expanding to provide training and education support for hospital workers as well.
Position Overview
The Executive Director oversees and administers the day to day operations of the Fund and develops all necessary internal procedures, policies and manuals to assure its successful operation. Part of that responsibility includes the development and monitoring of an annual budget as well as providing monthly budget and other financial reports to the Trustees.
In addition to reporting to the Trustees on all matters affecting programs, utilization, expenses and the management of the joint Fund, the Director functions as the chief educational officer, recruiting, hiring, training and supervising staff. This includes the development of training curricula and materials.
In order to insure the ongoing operation and expansion of the Fund, the Director actively solicits and secures foundation and government grants to support programs consistent with the Funds vision; administers grants, oversees program delivery, monitors compliance with grant requirements, monitors grant budgets and insures timely and proper reporting to funding agencies. The Director also negotiates, reviews, monitors and updates contracts with external consultants, providers and vendors including colleges and training organizations and other service providers to insure the Fund is receiving the highest quality of service.

Position Description
The School of Labor and Employment Relations invites applications and nominations for the full-time position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Labor and Employment Relations, assigned to the Labor Education Program. This is both an extension education program and an online undergraduate education program. LEP offers 80-100 programs and classes annually that enroll as many as 3,000 union leaders and others and are taught at locations throughout Illinois; and offers over 70 online sections a year enrolling 2,000 undergraduate students. The successful candidate will pursue a career of research in areas relevant to the labor movement, teach off-campus extension classes, and develop and teach on-line educational offerings to university undergraduates and labor union members throughout the State of Illinois. This position is based on the University of Illinois-Chicago campus. Experience working with under-represented communities and Spanish language skills is valued. Considerable travel around the state is required; although some travel may be replaced by on-line teaching.
This is a three-year visiting position, with a twelve-month appointment. Due to budget constraints the position is advertised as visiting, but the School hopes to convert the appointment to a tenure track position in the Labor Education Program as resources permit. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated potential for generating research publications at a standard of excellence appropriate for tenure at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Hans Boeckler Doctoral Fellowship
The Hans Boeckler Foundation (HBS) is pleased to announce the Hans Boeckler Doctoral Fellowship for 2010-2011. In March a committee will award one fellowship. The deadline for applications is February 15, 2010.
PURPOSE
These residential fellowships will be awarded to graduate students engaged in dissertation projects related to the Foundations research and policy consulting program and to the on-going work of its researchers. During their tenure fellows are expected to be in residence in Duesseldorf and to participate actively in the intellectual life of the Foundation.
The Hans-Boeckler-Foundation of the German Federation of Trade Unions (DGB) promotes codetermination as a principle for designing a democratic society. The HBS provides consulting services and training for elected representatives of works councils, staff councils and supervisory board representatives but also provides funding for some 2,000 university students. An important aspect of the Foundation’s work is related to academic research in various fields of study. Besides providing funding for external research, the HBS also maintains two own research institutes, the Institute for Economic and Social Research (WSI) and the Macroeconomic Policy Institute (IMK). Research projects cover a broad range of issues and fields of study. Among other aspects, research topics include welfare state development, co-determination, macroeconomics and European economic coordination, working time policy, collective bargaining, work organization, labor market regulation, gender studies, regional economic development, and the distribution of wealth and income. ELIGIBILITY AND TERMS OF THE FELLOWSHIP
Doctoral Candidates are eligible to apply if they have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. but the dissertation. The fellowship is available for non-German nationals.
Fellows may spend between six and twelve months in residence at the HBS for field research or theoretical work. Grants will normally begin by July 2010; however, individual arrangements are possible. The fellowship provides a stipend of 1150 Euro per month. In addition, the HBS will pay one economy class round trip from your location to Duesseldorf. Within limits of its possibilities the Foundation will also contribute to the costs for travel for field research within Germany.
