The truth about Puerto Rican Coffee

Dear UALE working group on immigration and globalization,

I am attaching an expose by a farmer in Puerto Rico sent by a colleague in the Education School here. The file that is in Spanish includes charts and a copy of a signed document that is not in the translated files. Please forward to anyone else that you know of who can help get some attention for this problem and/or would know of places that may help publish it.

Thanks,
Lynn Duggan

(Click on link above to download English and Spanish versions of the expose.)

Forwarded email:

Dear Lynn:

I am writing as your area of specialty came to mind regarding the attached letter that came to me from a coffee farmer in Puerto Rico. In short it is the same old story that has been plaguing Puerto Rico, big companies have forced local farmers to sell their land/crops for next to nothing and then "allowed" the farmers to "work" the land for a wage that is not living, sometimes renting the land back to the owner again for a fee that is they are not able to meet based upon the price the companies then buy the coffee from them, and turned those relationships into multimillion dollar enterprises for stockholders. AS a result the people of Puerto Rico live in poverty and are forced to find other ways to make a living like drugs. Death tolls are out of control as a result of this stolen economy. The attached piece is what I am calling and expose written by one farmer who refuses to sell.

If you know folks who may be able to help get some attention for this problem and or places that may help publish the piece please send it on or let me send it on.

Yours;
Gus
