The DePaul Labor Education Center offers a three-year certificate program in Labor Leadership that trains union members to become union leaders. The program consists of two semesters each year and cover a wide variety of topics. The first semester covers writing skills and grievance writing; the second semester emphasizes speaking skills, labor law (collective bargaining) and parliamentary procedure; the third semester covers collective bargaining; the fourth semester covers arbitration; the fifth semester covers organizing and economics for the trade unionist; and the six semester covers labor history and health and safety.
Credit towards a bachelor’s degree is available through the School for New Learning.The Labor Center also offers special classes on computer skills, labor laws, labor history tours and writing skills.
The Center’s three-day high school program involves 3,000 students from throughout the state of Illinois.Staff from the Labor Center teach students about unions, engage them in a collective bargaining role play and conduct tours of Pullman and other labor history sites.
